Insulin and Glucose Testing: One-off or a full insulin assay

Insulin and its role in non communicable diseases:
  • This test measures the amount of insulin in your blood. We all need insulin, it’s the hormone that allows glucose (your body’s primary source of fuel) to enter the cells of your body so it can be burned. But insulin resistance occurs when the cells in your muscles, fat, and liver no longer respond to the insulin signal. The glucose can’t get in the cells are starving, so they send signals to the pancreas to crank out even more, but to no avail. The glucose builds up in your bloodstream the same time your cells are starving, adding insult to injury. You’ll see that it’s this condition that is the underlying cause to most of your problems.
  • Insulin resistance is the primary defect in metabolic syndrome, the cluster of non communicable diseases (cancer, neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia), cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes).
  • Insulin resistance manifests itself in a myriad of tissues and ways, which may vary from person to person. You may be overweight, or not. You might have high cholesterol, but maybe it’s normal. You might have high blood pressure, although it could be low. All of these are tissue specific symptoms of metabolic syndrome.
  • Previously, doctors only diagnosed metabolic syndrome if you were obese. Now we know better. Even people who aren’t overweight develop metabolic syndrome!

Lipids Test: Total Cholesterol HDL, LDL & Tryglycerides

Picture
  • Cholesterol we all need cholesterol to survive, it’s an integral part of membranes and the precursor to steroid hormones. If you don’t consume cholesterol your body makes it-it’s that important.
  • LDL-C - you’ve probably heard of good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. The low density lipoprotein or LDL-C, the apparent villain, the classic biomarker of risk for a future heart attack, carries the cholesterol around your body from the liver.
  • Total cholesterol is the sum of LDL-C and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) so called ‘good’ cholesterol as it helps the body get rid of harmful or damaged cholesterol, by transporting it to the liver for breaking down.
  • Triglycerides are another type of fat found in blood, the level of these particles tells you how you are doing. The Hazard Ratio for triglycerides and heart disease is 1.8 (meaning that if they’re high, you have an 80 percent increased risk of heart attack) compared to LDL-C at 1.3. The high Triglycerides levels are caused by refined carbohydrates and sugars in your diet.

FAQs

What happens during these tests?
A finger is pricked using a sterile lancet, and a small sample of blood taken either directly onto the test strip or into a pipette, depending on the amount of blood required.
How long does it take?
Test results are available between 1 and 15 minutes later depending on which test is performed. For a full Kraft test the insulin and glucose response is taken over a 3-4hr period between 20-40 minute intervals.
Are there any risks to the test?
There is very little risk, you may have slight pain or bruising at the spot where the needle was put in, but most symptoms go away quickly.
We are working on a new product laser draw which will allow the draw to be rendered ‘painless’.

Nutrition and health coaching for obesity/diabetes and insulin resistance

We also offer diet and lifestyle courses for groups and individuals.
